Significantly, the pivotal year of 2012 marks not only the conclusion of the now-famous Mayan “Long Count” but also the 90th birthday of Reiki. Reiki’s brief history is a true chronology of wonders: constellations of miracles shining in an ever-deepening heaven of infinite energy. Within a single human life-span, Mikao Usui’s utterly unique approach to spiritually-based therapeutics has been embraced from pole to pole on every continent and in every nation.

There is good reason for Reiki’s incredible popularity: Usui’s system has broken down every preconceived limitation, every mind-erected barrier, every hidebound taboo, in fact every long-accepted paradigm that was thought to circumscribe the healing process. It is no surprise, then, that when exposed to Reiki’s power, individuals spontaneously mirror the liberating epiphany marking its evolution.

But how far can Reiki practitioners actually extend the reach of their unlimited beneficial energy? Is the exploration of Usui’s heritage at an end? While such a question may appear rhetorical, its answer entails very practical consequences. The matter was forcefully brought home to me some years ago when a client casually remarked after a session: “It’s too bad you can’t heal my bank account the way you heal my back!”

Having lost a lucrative job only one week before, she understandably felt more troubling discomfort at her looming lack of financial security than she had ever felt from the nagging pain of arthritis.

That night I pondered the paradoxical situation she had so starkly outlined. The sheer trenchancy of her offhand comment haunted my dreams. Usui and countless other Reiki therapists had offered up their lives to help people escape dis-ease and become fulfilled. What was their ultimate goal? Obviously, the furtherance of human well-being and happiness. But clearly, physical impairment was only one out of a multitude of important factors underlying profound frustration and sadness.

I sensed we - those who channeled Reiki energy on a routine basis - had perhaps allowed ourselves to unwittingly become complacent about our true role as healers and helpers. By becoming distracted and circumscribed by convention - the way things are always done - could we be missing a vast forest of energetic applications for a few imposing trees?

Still, my thoughts then were little more than frustratingly vague notions outlining a general problem but nevertheless moving in an arena far distant from any workable solution.

My intellectual efforts, however, did generate one solid conclusion: the majority of thoroughly disheartened individuals who petitioned me for help suffered from much more than chronic physical illness. They always appeared to live beneath overarching storm-clouds of ill fortune blighting virtually every facet of their lives. In such cases, unfavorable internal and external circumstances appeared to work together, imprisoning their unfortunate victims in dreary cages that were no less demoralizing for being invisible.

During ensuing evenings, after my therapeutic sessions had concluded, my thoughts slowly waded into murkier philosophical depths. Weren’t we taught by materialistic science that sickness is a physical disruption only physical intervention can cure? Yet, every Reiki practitioner understands that this perspective is grossly inaccurate. We have seen first-hand how nonphysical intervention often succeeds spectacularly where medicines and operations fail. Could it be that the same primordial healing process really permeates all the energetic relationships living beings encounter? In fact, don’t most advanced treatises on Qi, Prana, and Life Energy imply exactly that?

In the final analysis, what was bad luck, and how did it differ from physical illness? Misfortune was nothing more than a dis-eased concatenation of factors acting over a period of time to generate pain and negativity. Wouldn’t it then be possible to use Reiki to cure bad luck as well as physical disorders? If there was no substantive difference between the two, why did we persist in confining Reiki interventions to a narrow range of problems?

As weeks passed, bolstered by reading wisdom texts from both Eastern and Western sources, I returned to these notions with ever-deepening theoretical perspectives. Invigorated with fresh insight again and again, I began to perceive a glimmer of creative revelation. I grew confident that Reiki’s power was indeed absolutely infinite - if only we had the explicit means to unleash its full potential. I felt as if I had come into possession of a wonderful engine of positive change - but still lacked the key to turn it on.

At this time, one of those wonderful synchronicities occurred: an improbable intersection of events that inevitably marks authentic emanations of Divine Compassion. I was unexpectedly asked to host a folk healer newly arrived from Russia. Colleagues assured me that he and I would get along well, as he was regarded as a starets - a specially-empowered holy man - in his tightly-knit immigrant community. He took pains to call himself by a unique title - a Destiny Pilot - eventually insisting that I use the very same expression to describe myself once I had received his remarkable initiation.

Through the assistance of several sponsors, this healer, who was known to his close friends simply as Sergei of Kyzyl, told me he had left his homeland of 70 years in Russian Central Asia in response to an overwhelming mystical vision. Frail and bent with age, he nevertheless radiated a love so palpable that many compared it to sunlight.

I felt comfortable with him at once, as if I had known him forever. Although his English skills were minimal, over the coming months I would come to a detailed understanding of his unique power. Sergei’s talent lay in an intuitive mastery of the Infinite’s universal intelligence and an ability to call that intelligence into play for any individual need. It was Reiki - carried to an exponential power!

One clear evening as we strolled leisurely through a small local shopping mall, Sergei whispered in my ear: “Now is the time. You learn what is a Destiny Pilot. You will become one tonight!” And so I did...Sergei merely tapped me on the forehead, and instantly my old world fell away.

Although we had talked about the complete energy template of living things many times, I was not prepared for the sheer experiential intensity of the revelation that followed. Sergei’s initiation literally transported me to another dimension, a realm where I could see, hear, smell, and feel the full energy structure of other human beings. Each person who passed was illumined by a kaleidoscope of inner lights.

The traditional concept of an “aura” paled in comparison to this fantastic, dynamic structure composed of ever-changing energy currents. These streaming flows met and separated at key nodes. I found that, in accord with Sergei’s careful guidance, I could alter the patterns of input and output by manipulating these points, much like tuning a radio dial.

Over the next three days, Sergei showed me how to enter and leave this state at will. He taught me how to call up an accurate vision of any petitioner at a distance. He also illustrated the secrets to fine-tuning personal energy nodes for maximum effect. This crash course in energy perception and manipulation changed me completely! I had found the secret that I had sought for so long - the way to reconfigure energy so as to increase not only health but luck as well.

My initiation was still not finished, though. Sergei also made me understand that, just as a heart or brain surgeon cannot operate on him- or herself, an authentic Destiny Pilot cannot work directly for his or her own benefit: the underlying energy structures simply lie too close for objective manipulation.

He also made me swear that I would devote a significant fraction of my time to those who would or could never reciprocate the favor. “Charity is never wrong,” he admonished.
 
The very next day, infused by the kind of sudden burst of luminous energy that I had observed so often in my mentor, I spontaneously picked up the phone and called one of my unhappiest clients. “Let me try to heal your luck,” I asked. He assented, and within a week had entered into two new relationships - one business and the other romantic - that turned his life completely around.

For the last decade I have practiced the art I learned from Sergei - what I term “vanguard Reiki.” A logical extension of the traditional approach, it focuses upon the whole living person instead of simply the physical shell we call the body. I have seen tremendous success in this endeavor, as the power of Reiki is automatically multiplied a thousand-fold simply from linking it to my enhanced perception.
